It is in human nature to pet and kiss either our own baby or dog and cat as a sign of affection and love. This act is pleasing when there are no accompanying bad experiences; one of them is bad breath. Bad breath in dogs makes it very disgusting and unpleasant to have kisses, and even proximity becomes so distressing. Bad breath in dogs, called canine halitosis, may be due to many health issues, some of which are thoroughly discussed here.

Causes of bad breath in dogs:

Bad breath in dogs not only tells us about poor dental hygiene but also about so many complicated and sophisticated health issues; at present it has become one of the diagnostic tools of veterinarians to figure out the health nuisance of your dog.

Diseases of the gums and teeth:

Periodontal diseases are the most common cause of bad breath in dogs. When the growth of microorganisms occurs on the teeth, it leads to plaque formation and subsequently tartar buildup. Tartar causes the inflammation of gums called gingivitis this causes bad breath.

Foreign object stuck in the mouth:

When dogs chew on foreign materials like rope, toys, plastic, or sticks, these objects may be stuck between the teeth, under the tongue, or at the roof of the mouth. These stuck objects cause bad breath along with anorexia and vomiting.

Kidney abnormalities:

Kidneys are the blood-filtering organs in the body whose function is to filter waste from the blood. If kidneys are not functioning well, there will be an accumulation of toxins and waste products in the blood, notably urea, which gives bad breath. Increased blood urea level, called urea, also causes ulceration of oral mucosa, which is one of the signs of kidney disease.

Oral cancers:

Oral cancers most common are melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, odontogenic fibronoma, these cause halitosis.with  the passage of time these outgrowths become infected and sometimes necrosis occurs exacerbating bad breath.

Ingestion of poop or foreign objects:

Dogs are habitual of eating poops of other dogs and foreign objects. When dogs eat stool, their breath smells like stool; on the other hand, foreign object ingestion smells like rotten material, and dogs try to vomit.

Diet-induced bad breath:

Raw and non-recommended diets cause an imbalance of normal microbial flora in the mouth and guts, which leads to bad breath along with other digestive issues. Always try to feed your dog a diet approved by a pet dietitian, as this prevents many food poisonings and food-borne infections.

Diseases of liver:

The liver is a detoxifying organ whose role is to remove toxins from the blood. If a dog's liver is not properly working, toxins and bilirubin build up in the blood, showing signs like bad breath, yellowing of skin and eyes, etc. Weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting, and discomfort may indicate that your dog is having a liver problem.

Toxin ingestion:

Ingestion of toxic substance like cigarette, plant toxins give rise to nicotine like and rancid smell of the breath. Many toxins are available in the dogs surrounding which have characteristic smell and bad breath. This can only be reversed by using a specific antidote, for which the kind of toxin your dog has ingested holds much importance.

Ketone bodies in the body:

When the energy level in the body falls down, the body utilizes the stored fats, and ketone bodies are formed, which give acetone or a sweet smell to the breath. Diabetes also causes bad breath along with other symptoms such as weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination, altered appetite, etc.

How to manage and get rid of bad breath in dogs:

When you observe your dog with bad breath, the first thing to do is schedule a visit to a veterinary doctor to have a dental examination and overall check-up. Here are some strategies to follow when a bad breath issue arises:

Regular tooth brushing:

Regularly brush mouth of your dog by using canine paste and toothbrushes, toothpaste and brushes are available at the pets store which is recommended to use after prescription from pets specialist. It reduces the chance of plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth, thus preventing bad breath.

Use dental-specific diets:

Diets that are specifically prepared to reduce accumulation in the dental spaces should be used; these are larger size and coarse texture rubs the teeth removing the previous plaque, teeth, so these not only lessen buildup but also clear the teeth of built tartar.

Dental treats:

Dental treats are the products containing additives which improve oral environment by preventing overgrowth of foul-smelling microbes. Dental treats also remove formed plague by scratching while dogs chew this remove the accumulated materials from the teeth.

Treatment of underlying diseases:

Treatment of specific health condition causing bad breath is a must to eliminate bad breath issues in dogs. Treat the kidney and liver diseases if bad is due to diseases of these organs, specific diagnostic tests are available evaluating the functions of these both viral organs. Liver function tests and kidney function tests are recommended if obvious indications are not present. These tests rule out the presence of abnormalities in these organs, giving hints of other organ defects.

Preventing from eating non-food items:

Don't allow your dog to eat poop and other foul-smelling items. Keep your dog away from sources of toxins and other foreign objects that your dog eats voraciously, like strings, plastic objects, toys, etc.

Home remedies to manage halitosis:

The way to resolve this issue altogether is to treat underlying causes, but it can be managed to some extent at home. Total reliance on home remedies should not be practiced as it persists for a longer period of time. This should be resolved by having an appointment with a veterinary doctor, as he or she will perform some diagnostic procedures and spot the exact cause of bad breath and then accordingly prescribe diets and medication for complete resolution.

Conclusion:

Bad breath medically known as halitosis is a condition in dogs that causes the owner to be away from them. This compels owners not to cuddle and pet their dogs; they become unpleasant for the owners. There are so many reasons for bad breath in dogs; some may be local and others are organ-specific. Treatment depends upon the detection of underlying causes, which can be performed by diagnostic procedures and imaging techniques. Veterinary assistance must be sought to remove this nuisance; otherwise, this recurs along with other health concerns.
